A yacht is a recreational boat. Until the 1950s, almost all yachts were made of wood or steel, but a much wider range of materials is used today. Although wood hulls are still seen, the most common construction material is fibreglass, followed by aluminium, steel, carbon fiber. Modern yachts have efficient sail-plans that allow them to sail towards the wind. They are small in size compare to ships and ferries.
