National Anthem
‘Jana Gana Mana...’ is our national anthem. It is signature tune of our country.
Our national anthem was written by Rabindranath Tagore who was a great poet and writer. He won Nobel prize for his ‘Geetanjali’, a book of poems.
Our country adopted it as our national anthem on January 24, 1950, 2½ years after becoming free. But as much earlier as 1911 the song was sung at Calcutta session of Indian National Congress, the party of freedom struggle.
The anthem fills us with patriotic feelings. Whenever we hear it we stand motionless in its honour. Wherever our nation flag is hoisted the national anthem is sung or its tune played. When an Indian wins a medal in international sports event our national anthem is played.
Most of the educated Indians know the anthem by heart, word by word. In schools the children are taught the anthem and the tune it is sung to. The military bands play it the best.
