Consists of three equally sized vertical stripes of green, white and red colours, the flag of Italy was adopted on 21 January 1919. The green colour stands for the plains and the hills and white stands for the snowy Alps, and red for the blood spilt in the Italian Independence wars. There is also a religious interpretation of these colours, to which green represents hope, white represents faith and red represents charity.
